The Industrial Revolution 4.0 demanding students to be more creative, adaptive, and have good soft skills. One of the competencies that must be possessed by students includes the ability to think critically, creatively, and have high competitiveness. The achievement of these competencies can be done for example by participating in debate activities. 


These abilities such as debating is an important part of competition in the global era. Debate competitions are useful for broading the knowledge, establishing a better english language skills and the ability to have a better understanding of current issues. With good English skills, it can improve students' communication skills in interacting with the international community, while the ability of think critically will increase student's ability to make decisions based on logical and factual analysis. 


The development of student activities is directed at developing the potential of students to become human beings who have faith and piety, noble character, creative, competent and cultured. One of the coaching efforts is through a debate competition, which has been formulated in the Nusantara Overland Varsity English Debate (NOVED).


WHAT IS NOVED?

NOVED, also known as the Nusantara Overland Varsity English Debate, is a Classic British Parliamentary Debate competition formerly known as JOVED. Noved registration has been opened since April 5th and closed on June 30th 2021. This year Multimedia Nusantara University and Podomoro University are getting the honor of hosting this online competition. 



EDC's PREPARATION FOR NOVED 2021

As one of the student activity unit at Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University which focuses on the field of English debate. English Debating Club (EDC) participated in this debate competition by submitting 2 delegates, they are Susianti & Ghaniyyah Nauli. What preparations and strategies do they use to face this most prestigious debate competition? 


"Preparations and strategies that we do include sharing reading topics that might arise. Then doing exercises both with couches and independently. The technical trail that we will use e.g. case building using Google document because we are in 2 different places. And of course we build good communication and boarding so that there are no disputes before or during the competition. Then the strategy we did was when we were in Team Opening then I would be PM/LO and Ghani as DPM/DLO. However, when we were in the closing team Ghani will be the MG/MO and I will be the GW/OW." said Susianti. 


The preliminary round NOVED will be held on 7-8th and 14-15th of August 2021, a selection session will be held again to compete for the top 12 for novices. the implementation of NOVED 2021 is carried out virtually through the Zoom meeting platform, Discord, Herokuapp, Tabby cat and Whatsapp group for coordination. "During the match, my toughest opponents were UNDIP in the 1st round and USU in the 5th and 6th rounds," said Susanti.


After the debate competition took place, various impressions were definitely felt by the contestants, as in another case, Susianti one of the delegates from English Debating Club (EDC) Untirta said that the impression she got that this event was very exciting, although sometimes she didn't know the urgency of the motions, so she feels motivated to read more and explore more knowledge.
